IND. SCHOOL DISTRICT #36

KELLIHER PUBLIC SCHOOL

REGULAR SCHOOL BOARD MEETING

MAY 8, 2014

 

The School Board of ISD #36, Kelliher, MN met May 8, 2014 in the school media center.  The meeting was called to order by Chair Frank Duresky at 7:00 p.m.  Members present:  Ed Gehlert, Barbara Woltjer, Dawn Jensen, Frank Duresky, David Nistler, Jerry Geerdes and Tim Lutz, Superintendent, Ex-Officio. Members absent:  None.

 

Visitors:  Vicky Rabe, Mary Lundin and Laura Nelson.

 

The Pledge of Allegiance was said.

 

Motion by Ed Gehlert, second by Dave Nistler to approve the minutes of the April 10, 2014 regular board meeting.  Motion passed unanimously.

 

Motion by Barb Woltjer, second by Dawn Jensen to approve the Treasurer’s reports and May bills in the amount of $107,338.48 and bills paid between the April and May meetings in the amount of $8,614.28.  Motion passed unanimously.

 

Comments from Visitors

Vicky Rabe thanked the board for their support for the students attending the FCCLA state meeting.  She also presented a request for support for 4 students plus advisor expenses to attend the national FCCLA meeting in San Antonio, Texas in July.

Tim Lutz presented a request from Carly Wang for students and chaperones to attend Valleyfair Physics Day on May 19th.

 

Positive Feedback:

1.     Congratulations to the Kelliher School District for being mentioned and cited by Governor Dayton during his State-of-the-State speech.

 

Principal’s Report:

1.     Congratulations to the March students of the month:  Primary – Abby Neft (gr. 1), Intermediate – Whitney Van Wert (gr. 8) and High School – Barrett Grundmeier (gr. 10).

2.     Congratulations to the April students of the month:  Primary – Aarion Lyons (gr. 1), Intermediate – Destiny Heck (gr. 7) and High School – Breanna Salmonson (gr. 11).

3.     Congratulations to the May students of the month:  Primary – Wyatt Plackner (gr. 3), Intermediate – Emily Stillday (gr. 5) and High School – Conner Rennemo (gr. 9).

4.     The prom was well attended and a great success.

5.     Valleyfair Physics Day will be May 19th, Mayfest will be held at 1:30 on May 15th, the Honors/Attendance breakfast will be held on May 16th and Big Bog Day will be held on May 22nd.

6.     Student Council would like the board to consider weighting grades for college level courses.

 

Committee Reports

1.     The sports coop. committee met this week.  Discussion was held on the current coaching vacancies and perhaps forming a hiring committee.  Cross country was also discussed.

 

Superintendent’s Report:

1.     Superintendent Lutz reported that the district’s health insurance renewal came in with a 5% decrease.  The district will continue with the three plans that are currently in place.

2.     Superintendent Lutz updated the board on staffing.  Discussion was held regarding the placement on the salary schedule for the new special education position.  The board authorized the administration to offer steps in accordance with the EdMN-Kelliher Master Agreement.

3.     There was no update on the generator project.

4.     WSM architects are working on plans for the new bus garage, with construction to begin this summer.

5.     Superintendent Lutz informed the board that the district will need to renew membership in the Minnesota State High School League for next year.

6.     Dawn Jensen reported on her attendance at the MSBA Phase III and Phase IV workshops in St. Cloud.

7.     Superintendent Lutz reported that the MCA/GRAD testing is finished and the district is starting the MAPS testing.

8.     Graduation for the class of 2014 will be held on May 24th.  Discussion was held on the board members attending and handing out diplomas.  Employees and board members of the district who wish to, are once again purchasing chairs for the graduating seniors.

9.     Board members and EdMN-Kelliher Support Staff met to begin negotiations.  Discussion was held regarding their initial requests.

10.  Copies of the revised 2014 budget were given to the board and discussion was held on the revisions.

11.  Superintendent Lutz reported that he had received a letter of retirement from Jeff Brown, Industrial Arts teacher and a letter of resignation from Deanna Hand, Early Childhood teacher.  Discussion was held on advertising for new positions.  The job posting for the Industrial Arts position has already been done; the administration was directed to advertise for an Early Childhood teacher and also a full-time math position, with the possibility of finding a candidate with multiple licensures.

 

Consent Agenda:

Motion by Barb Woltjer, second by Ed Gehlert to approve the graduation of the class of 2014.  Motion passed unanimously.

 

Motion by Ed Gehlert, second by Dawn Jensen to approve board to board agreements for the 2014-15 school year as follows:  From Red Lake to Kelliher – Myron Jones, III (K), Hunter Cloud (K), Braelyn Johnson (K), Nodinoons Jordain (K), Vivianne Wilson (K), Amber Cloud (gr. 9) and Brent Cloud (gr. 11).  Motion passed unanimously.

 

Motion by Dave Nistler, second by Jerry Geerdes to approve 2014-15 membership in the Minnesota State High School League.  Motion passed unanimously.

 

Motion by Dawn Jensen, second by Barb Woltjer to approve the revised 2013-14 budget as presented.  Motion passed unanimously.

 

Action Items:

Motion by Jerry Geerdes, second by Dave Nistler to accept the retirement of Jeff Brown as Industrial Arts teacher with thanks and appreciation.  Motion passed unanimously.

 

Motion by Barb Woltjer, second by Ed Gehlert to approve the FCCLA’s request for support to attend the national FCCLA convention in San Antonio, Texas.  Motion passed unanimously.

 

Motion by Jerry Geerdes, second by Frank Duresky to accept the resignation of Deanna Hans as Early Childhood teacher with thanks and appreciation.  Motion passed unanimously.

 

Motion by Dave Nistler, second by Barb Woltjer to approve hiring Caleb Annin as Special Education teacher beginning with the 2014-15 school year.  Motion passed unanimously.

 

Motion by Jerry Geerdes, second by Dave Nistler to adjourn the meeting at 9:00 p.m.  Motion passed unanimously.

 

The next regular school board meeting is scheduled for Thursday, June 12th at 7:00 p.m. in the school media center.
